As the lead singer of Jackal and the Wind - a band born in the beautiful mountains of Paarl, Chris Kruger has had a journey of music - he shares parts of that journey with you today. The singer, songwriter and guitarist joins us to talk about his favorite songs and the stories behind them, how he eats weetbix (an important question in anyone's life) and how he named a song after a legendary teacher. He also battles the Squash Banana lyric quiz - can someone finally get Cher - The Shoop Shoop Song?!

In episode three you and I get to know James Deacon and Daniel Pawson - two young musicians who are changing the game in South African and around the world. We talk about their favorite musical memories and James randomly recreates a trumpet with a slow jazz background - needless to say with coffees in hand and music at heart (cheesy but good) their first visit to the Squash Banana studio was memorable. Oh and also they battle each other to become the master of lyrics too!

In episode two we sit down, despite her being in Los Angeles, with South African singer-songwriter and all round talent, Ashlinn Gray. We talk of how she "stumbled" upon a life of singing while pursuing the dramatic arts. Ashlinn also gives us an insight to her music life giving us her favorite songs and the stories that come with them. We also see Ashlinn take on the Squash Banana Lyric Quiz where we challenge her memory of some iconic, and not so iconic, lyrics.

In this the first episode of Tell Me Stories we delve into a song called "We Shall Overcome." First sung in the 1890s, this song has weaved it's way through history making an impact every step of the way. We map out this song's journey, and our journey with this song, from the cotton fields in the 1890s to the tobacco plants of the 1940s. From the streets of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s to the present where we all need a little faith.
